Escape!

The Great Houdini worked his way up to stardom with an incredible will to thrill.  He traveled the world breaking out of handcuffs, jails, handcuffs and jails (after being searched) and developing stunts that left his audiences breathless.   Fleischman enhances this account of Houdini’s life with outstanding photographs of Houdini on his long and bumpy road to fame.

A Monster Calls

It comes at 12:07 each night, waking the boy. But it is not the monster Conor expects. This monster knows his fear, knows his nightmare. The monster comes wanting something from thirteen-year-old Conor who dreams the same nightmare night after night since his mother began her cancer treatments. What the moster wants is terrible, shuddering: he wants the truth– from Conor. The truth that could free him.

The Other Side of the Island – Allegra Goodman

9 11 2011

Cover of The Other Side of the Island

Read Allegra Goodman’s dystopian novel The Other Side of the Island this weekend- and LOVED it. In the vein of Lois Lowry’s The Giver, both the writing and tone are accessible with believable and strong characters. Highly recommended.
