Brooklyn Library Advisory Committe (BLAC):

BLAC (Brooklyn New School/Brooklyn Collaborative School Library Advisory Committee) is a group of parent volunteers who work with the BNS/BCS Librarian, Susan Westover, to support the school library’s commitment to literacy programming for students and their families. BLAC also promotes the services of the library to teachers and parents, and raises funds for special programs, new materials and capital improvements. Additionally, BLAC supports technology initiatives in the library to address issues surrounding digital literacy, research skills, and the needs of the twentieth-century learner. As an advisory committee, BLAC works with Susan to establish priorities and goals for the future of the library, but also supports its day-to-day operations. Parents are invited to volunteer for the library in any capacity! If you are interested in becoming part of BLAC, feel free to contact Susan or BLAC’s Brooklyn New School  parent contact, Amanda Clarke, to learn more. If you are interested in volunteering for a particular project or event such as the Scholastic Book Fair or Open Library (after school library programming), or have time to help support the library in other ways please contact Susan or use the contact form below.

Library Mission:

The philosophy and mission of the BNS/BCS Library Media Program matches the philosophy and mission of the diverse school community it serves.  By providing access to information in a variety of formats, we seek to inform and empower staff and students to be effective, critical, analytical and creative users of ideas and information.  We model lifelong learning by engaging in ongoing collaborative, interdisciplinary, and professional development that challenges staff and students to broaden their interests and to develop skills in all subjects. We seek, through curriculum and pedagogy, to model active engagement in a democratic and evolving learning community.
